Sexting can negatively impact a relationship, researchers found
By Peter Lloyd for MailOnline. Men and women have different reasons for ‘sexting’, with females giving a host of driving factors for why they choose to send a nude image, a study has found. The researchers from Arizona State University looked at the dating phenomenon among young people and found women are four times more likely than men to send a nude image in order to stop the recipient losing interest.
The findings also reveal women sometimes find the process both liberating and empowering. Doctoral student Morgan Johnstonbaugh asked more than 1, college students to explain why they sent sexually-explicit material via text.
To ensure your sexting game is as strong as possible, here are some things to take into consideration when sexting a new bae.
A man approaches you in a bar and says, “You’re beautiful,” after making eyes at you all night. It’s romantic, for sure — even has a pseudo-Hollywood quality to it — but there’s also something extremely predictable about the whole exchange. Your pocket buzzes in the middle of a meeting at work: You surreptitiously pull out your phone to find a text from your paramour. Join me? A text like that is what fans the flames of passion. But let’s be honest: The way you sext your partner of 10 years is a whole lot different than the way you sext a lover of 10 days.
In fact, there are four distinct stages of a textual relationship that deserve acknowledgement. It’s hard to say why, but the funny bone has long been connected to other bones. And in the early days of a relationship, sexting is often a race to the perfect punch line. Playfully disarming your lover with comedy is a great way to ease the tension in a text communication, and often presents the shortest distance between a cold call and the end goal.
If you’re in the stand-up comedy phase, you may receive sexts that look a lot like this: “Let’s turn down the lights and get our groove Once you get past the initial playfulness of a relationship, you start taking your texts and sexts a little more seriously. In the “this is a real relationship” phase, the jokes often take a back seat to more thoughtful and considerate messages — because let’s be honest: You don’t want to mess things up now.
The Timing of Sexts Says a Ton About Your Relationship
It makes sense that the word sext was born from a connection. A sexually explicit or suggestive message, photograph, or image sent by a digital device, this portmanteau of sex and text is one of the many ways we express and act on physical attraction and intimacy through technology. Cleavage shots, dick pics, and nudes all file under sexting, as does texting, whether it be a few smutty sentences, a provocative play-by-play of your deepest fantasies, or even a simple string of emojis tongue, taco, water droplets.
I love a good sext message sans photo, preferably out of the blue at the most ordinary of moments, sent from someone I thoroughly enjoy sleeping with and vice versa.
Why do people sext? Why do they send racy or naked photos or videos and sexually loaded texts? For a short-term hookup, sexting might seem like a direct way to get what you want—or at least try to. But according to my research, sexting is actually most likely to occur within a committed relationship. Some research suggests that people often engage in sexting after being coerced by romantic partners or to avoid an argument with their romantic partner. So perhaps anxiety and concern about what your romantic partner thinks about you promote behaviors like sexting.
As a human development researcher who studies how technology influences relationships, I wanted to understand if people who are anxious about dating or about what their partner thinks of them are more likely to sext. One of the major theories regarding relationships is called attachment theory. It suggests that the way you related to your caregiver as an infant and vice versa shapes how you come to view relationships later in life. If your caregiver was attuned to your needs and responsive, you will develop a secure attachment.
That means you are comfortable with close relationships because your experience paid off—mom or dad was there when you were distressed or hungry or cold. From that experience, you learned that relationships are safe and reciprocal, and your attachment anxiety is low. But if your caregiver was not so attuned to your needs, was intrusive or inattentive, you might develop what is called an insecure attachment.

How to move your relationship on through sexting
Unable to step out of homes, they are left with only one choice: communicate digitally. That means taking sexual intimacy, too, online with sexting. While this may safeguard them from Covid, it leaves them vulnerable to massive privacy threats. For people meeting partners online for the first time, it could also open up possibilities of sexual abuse. Risque photos and videos, shared over the internet, could potentially be misused as revenge porn. However, there are ways to safely share intimate content virtually.
Next to talking one-on-one, texting is currently one of the most instant forms of communication. Keeping in touch with your significant other throughout the day can be thoughtful, but constant contact may be a sign of controlling behavior. Consider talking to your partner about giving you a little bit of space. Or send them to you? You have the right to choose whether or not you want to engage in any kind of sexual activity, and that includes sexting with your partner. You deserve to feel safe and respected in your relationship at all times.
Sexting can also have legal consequences. Any nude photos or videos of someone under the age of 18 could be considered child pornography, which is illegal to own or distribute. Does your partner ask to read your texts? Or do they read them behind your back? Healthy relationships are built on trust, not jealousy. You have the right to privacy and the ability to talk to whomever you like.
If your partner refuses to change, you could be in an unhealthy relationship.
